Overall, France has a fairly large agricultural sector, being the most valuable in the EU. Forty-nine percent of French land is farmland, however only about 2.5 percent of French jobs are in the agriculture industry. More food is imported than exported from France, even of the foods that are commonly grown, such as fruits and vegetables. Farming is largely commercial, and 58 percent of farms are owned by individuals, although the majority of dairy, cattle, pig, and poultry farms are held by corporations. Cereal production, such as wheat and maize accounts for over half of the farmland in France, although the country only ranks eleventh in total cereal production.
